Navigating Arizona’s oversize load regulations requires careful planning to ensure compliance with state laws. Whether you’re managing heavy equipment transport or machinery hauling services, understanding permit requirements, travel restrictions, and escort services is crucial for smooth operations.

Arizona Oversize Permits & Heavy Haul Transport Regulations

Arizona oversize permits are valid for four days and can be purchased at most Ports of Entry. Accurate weight and dimension reporting is essential—Arizona scales enforce strict compliance, so permits must closely match actual measurements.

Operating Hours & Travel Restrictions

  • Daylight Only: ½ hour before sunrise to sunset (standard)
  • Night/Weekend Exceptions: For loads ≤16′ wide/120′ long/250,000 lbs on Interstates (3:00 AM–12:00 PM)
  • Urban Curfews: No travel in Phoenix/Tucson during peak hours (7–9 AM, 4–6 PM)

Legal Dimensions & Weight Limits

  • Width: 8’6″ (legal); up to 16′ with permits
  • Height: 14′ (legal); up to 16′ permitted
  • Length: 65′ max on non-Interstates; 120′ with oversize transport logistics
  • Weight:
    • Single Axle: 20,000 lbs
    • Tandem: 34,000–46,000 lbs
    • Max Permit: 250,000 lbs (Class C for superloads)

Escort Requirements for Oversized Load Transportation

  • Width: 1 escort (>14′), 2 escorts (>12′ on restricted routes)
  • Length: 1+ escorts (>120′)
  • Height: Escort with height pole (>16′)
  • Overhang: 1 escort (>20′)

Safety & Compliance

  • Signage: “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs (≥9′ width)
  • Flags/Lights: 12″ red flags for overwidth/overhang; amber lights for night moves
  • Equipment Rules: Detach blades >14′ wide or secure properly

Specialized Transport Services

  • Class C Permits: Required for loads >14′ wide/16′ high/120′ long
  • Route Surveys: Mandatory for complex machinery hauling services

Why Compliance Matters

Adhering to oversize load safety regulations prevents fines and ensures safe transport. Proper route planning for overweight vehicles and understanding pilot vehicle requirements are key to efficient heavy haul transport.
