All oversize loads entering Emerald Isle, located in Carteret County, must conform to the requirements set by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

In Emerald Isle, any load over 12 feet in width, 13.5 feet in height, and weighing more than 80,000 pounds should obtain a special oversize load permit from the Emerald Isle Public Works Department or the Carteret County Government.

Permits are required for loads that will be transported on public highways within Emerald Isle, such as NC-58, and must be in compliance with the North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 20, Article 6.

In accordance with North Carolina regulations, escort vehicles are necessary for oversize loads exceeding 12 feet in width or 13.5 feet in height when moving through Emerald Isle.

For loads wider than 16 feet or taller than 15 feet, a law enforcement escort may be mandated. Arrangements for such escorts can be made with the Carteret County Sheriff's Department or the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

To obtain a permit, applicants should visit the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Oversize/Overweight Permit Unit website, or contact the Carteret County Government directly.

Documentation required may include proof of insurance, detailed route plans, and load diagrams.

Emerald Isle restricts oversize movements during morning and evening rush hours (7-9 am, 4-6 pm) on major routes such as NC-58.

Seasonal restrictions may be in effect during hurricanes or flooding, which are more common in late summer and early fall.

Loads are generally prohibited on residential streets unless it's the only viable access route, in which case coordination with the Public Works Department is necessary.

The base permit fee is $150. Complex routes or those needing additional law enforcement escorts incur extra fees, up to $1,000 or more, based on the complexity and the escort services required.

Administrative fees may also apply for expedited applications.
