All oversize loads entering the City of Lawton, located in Comanche County, must conform to the requirements set by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Services.

In general, any vehicle over 14 feet in width, 14 feet 6 inches in height, and within the 180,000-pound gross weight class should obtain an oversize load permit from the Lawton Traffic Engineering Division at City Hall.

Loads exceeding 18 feet in width or 150 feet in length require additional coordination with Fort Sill Military Reservation due to potential route conflicts along Rogers Lane and Sheridan Road.

Private escort vehicles are required for loads exceeding 12 feet in width on two-lane highways and 14 feet on four-lane highways within Lawton city limits. One certified escort vehicle is required for widths between 12-14 feet, and two escorts are required for loads over 14 feet wide.

Lawton Police Department provides mandatory escorts for loads exceeding 16 feet in width, 17 feet in height, or 150 feet in length. Police escorts must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance through the Lawton Police Traffic Unit at (580) 581-3277. The fee for police escort services is $75 per hour with a 4-hour minimum, plus overtime rates if applicable.

Permit applications for Lawton can be submitted online through the Oklahoma DOT Motor Carrier Services portal at www.okladot.state.ok.us, by phone at (405) 425-2390, or in person at the Lawton City Hall Annex, 212 SW 9th Street, Room 103. The Traffic Engineering Division processes applications Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Required documentation includes vehicle registration, proof of insurance with minimum $1 million liability coverage, detailed route plan, and load dimensions certified by a professional engineer for loads exceeding 200,000 pounds gross weight.

Heavy haul movements are restricted from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM on weekdays along Cache Road, Sheridan Road, and Gore Boulevard to avoid school and military traffic congestion.

From November 15 through March 15, additional restrictions may apply during ice or snow events on elevated sections of I-44 and Lee Boulevard. The City Engineer reserves the right to suspend permits during inclement weather.

All oversized loads are prohibited on residential streets in the Country Club Addition, Elmer Thomas Park area, and around Cameron University campus. Approved routes include I-44, US-62 (Cache Road), and US-281 (11th Street) with designated truck lanes.

City of Lawton oversize load permits cost $25 for single trip permits, $100 for annual permits, and $200 for superload permits. Additional fees apply for bridge analysis ($500 per bridge) and route surveys ($300 per mile within city limits).

Fees increase incrementally based on dimensions: loads over 15 feet wide add $50, over 16 feet high add $75, and over 150 feet long add $100. Weekend or holiday movements incur an additional 50% surcharge.
