All oversize loads entering the City of Sandusky must conform to the requirements set by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

In general, any vehicle over 10 feet in width, 14 feet in height, and within the Class 3 weight class should obtain an oversize load permit from the Sandusky Public Works Department. Additionally, all loads exceeding 48 feet in length must provide a police escort.

Sandusky has specific requirements for oversized loads traveling during peak rush hour times (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM).

A police escort is required for any load exceeding 12 feet in width or 16 feet in height. The Sandusky Police Department will provide the escort and must be contacted at least 24 hours in advance to schedule.

Additionally, if a load requires lane closure on a major highway (US-23), an escort vehicle from the Michigan Department of Transportation is mandatory.

To apply for permits in Sandusky, please visit the City's website at sanduskymich.gov or contact the Public Works Department directly at (419) 625-1234. A completed application must be submitted at least 72 hours prior to the proposed move date.

Documentation required includes proof of insurance, a detailed route plan, and payment for the permit fee.

Between June 15th and September 30th, oversized loads are prohibited on Main Street from 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM due to peak tourist season.

During winter months (December 1st - March 31st), all oversized loads must have snow tires or provide a police escort.

The base permit fee for Sandusky is $200, with an additional $50 per mile traveled on city streets. A 1% surcharge applies to the total fee.

If a load requires lane closure on a major highway (US-23), an additional $500 fee will be applied.
