All oversize loads entering the City of Summit must conform to the requirements set by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

In general, any vehicle over 12 feet in width, 14 feet in height, and within the Class 3 weight category should obtain an oversize load permit from the Summit Public Works Department.

Additionally, all oversized loads must travel on designated truck routes and avoid sensitive areas like parks and residential neighborhoods during peak hours (7am-9am and 4pm-6pm).

In Summit, escort vehicles are required for all oversized loads exceeding 14 feet in width or 16 feet in height. This includes trailers, containers, and other heavy haul equipment.

The City of Summit requires a minimum of one (1) escort vehicle per load, with an additional vehicle added for every additional 10 feet of width or height.

The base permit fee for an oversize load in Summit is $150, with additional fees ranging from $25 to $50 per mile traveled on designated truck routes.
