Loads exceeding 8 feet 6 inches in width, 13 feet 6 inches in height, or 80,000 pounds gross weight require an oversize/overweight permit from the West Milwaukee Public Works Department.

Special attention is required for routes passing near the Wisconsin State Fair Park or along Greenfield Avenue, where additional clearance checks are often necessary due to overhead signage and increased pedestrian traffic.

Loads exceeding 12 feet in width require one escort vehicle, while loads over 14 feet wide require two escorts. Police escorts are mandatory for any movement along National Avenue during business hours.

The West Milwaukee Police Department requires 48-hour notice for police escorts, with a $125/hour fee (2-hour minimum). Private escort vehicles must display proper warning signs and maintain continuous radio contact with the transport vehicle.

Permits are processed through the West Milwaukee Public Works Department (414-645-1530) with online applications available via the Milwaukee County Permit Portal. Same-day processing is available before 10:00 AM for an additional $75 expedite fee.

Applicants must submit axle weight distributions, detailed route maps showing all turns, and valid certificates of insurance naming the Village of West Milwaukee as additionally insured.

No oversize movements permitted weekdays 6:30-9:00 AM or 4:00-6:00 PM on Highway 175, National Avenue, or Greenfield Avenue due to rush hour congestion.

Winter restrictions (December 1-March 15) prohibit overweight movements during snow emergencies declared by Milwaukee County Highway Department.

Bridge restrictions apply on 43rd Street over the Menomonee River (80,000 lb max) and prohibited routes include all residential streets east of South 60th Street without special authorization.

Base permit fee: $60 for single trip (72-hour validity) or $450 for annual permits. Additional charges apply for overweight vehicles ($15 per axle over legal limit) and extra-wide loads ($2.50 per foot over 8'6" width).

Route review fees apply for loads exceeding 14' width or 150,000 lbs ($250 flat fee). Night/weekend moves require a $150 special handling fee paid directly to Public Works.
