For companies involved in heavy equipment transport or machinery hauling services, understanding Missouri’s oversize load management requirements is critical for compliance and efficient operations.

Permit Information

  • Permit Validity: Oversize permits in Missouri are valid for 7 days.
  • Requirement: Permits must be secured before entering the state.
  • Single-trip Permits: Required for all oversize/overweight movements.

Operating Hours for Oversized Load Transportation

  • Standard Travel: Allowed from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, including weekends.
  • Weekend Restrictions: Apply for loads exceeding 14′ wide.
  • 24-Hour Movement: Permitted for overweight-only loads up to 112,000 lbs GVW (except in metro/tourist areas).
  • Special Logistics Management Considerations: Apply in:
    • St. Louis metro area
    • Kansas City region
    • Springfield city limits
    • Tourist zones (Lake of the Ozarks and Branson)

Restricted Travel Times

  • Major Holidays: No travel on major holidays or preceding days.
  • Weekday Rush Hour Bans: In:
    • St. Louis: 6:30-9:00 AM and 3:30-6:30 PM
    • Kansas City: 7:00-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM
  • Mississippi River Bridge Restrictions: Apply on key routes.
  • Tourist Season Limitations:
    • Branson: June 1 – Oct 31
    • Lake of the Ozarks: June 1 – Labor Day

Length:

  • 53′ max: On Interstates
  • 60′ max: On non-designated highways (>10 air miles)

Width:

  • 8’6″: On Interstates
  • 8′: On secondary roads

Height:

  • 14′: On designated routes
  • 13’6″: Elsewhere (must use drop-deck trailer for over-height permits)

Weight Limits:

  • Gross: 80,000 lbs
  • Single axle: 20,000 lbs (22,000 on secondary)
  • Tandem axle: 34,000 lbs (36,000 on secondary)
  • Tridem axle: 34,000-42,500 lbs (depending on spacing)

Routine Permit Limits for Oversize Freight Solutions

  • Length: Up to 150′
  • Width: Up to 16′
  • Height: Up to 16′ (15′7″ max on some routes)
  • Weight Limits:
    • 5 axles: 104,000 lbs
    • 6 axles: 120,000 lbs
    • 7 axles: 130,000 lbs
  • Superload Classification: Anything exceeding these dimensions or 160,000 lbs GVW.

Escort Requirements for Oversize Load Safety

Length Escorts:

  • 90′: 1 escort (all highways except divided)

Width Escorts:

  • 12′4″: 1 escort (2 on non-designated highways)
  • 14′: 1 escort on Interstates, 2 on two-lane roads

Height Escorts:

  • 15′6″: Route survey + high-pole escort
  • Utility bucket trucks may be required for wire lifting.

Safety & Compliance for Transporting Large Equipment

Signage:

  • Oversize Load” Signs: Required when width exceeds 10′6″ or length exceeds 90′.

Markings:

  • Flags: Required at all extreme projections.
  • Proper Lighting: Required for night moves.
  • Special Compliance Rules: For stretched trailers (must declare used/unused deck space).
