Oversize & Overweight Permits in Oklahoma: Key Regulations

When it comes to transporting heavy hauloversize or overweight loads – in Oklahoma, being aware of the vehicle dimensions, weight limits, and permit requirements is important to avoid issues when transiting your heavy haul. Here are details:

Permit Validity & Operating Hours

  • Oversize permits are valid for three days and must be obtained before entering Oklahoma.
  • Operating times are from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, seven days a week.
  • Overweight permits allow continuous travel but must be requested when applying.

Restricted Travel & Holiday Closures

  • Restricted on Interstates in Cleveland and Tulsa counties during peak hours (7–9 AM and 3:30–6:30 PM, weekdays).
  • No permit travel is allowed on major holidays.

Oklahoma Turnpikes & Legal Dimensions

  • Loads up to 9’6” wide don’t require a Pike Pass.
  • Wider loads (up to 11’6” or 13’6” on Cherokee Turnpike) require a Pike Pass reference.
  • Maximum weight on turnpikes is 108,000 lbs.

Legal Dimensions for Heavy Haul Trucks:

  • Length: 59’6” on U.S. Defense Highways; 53’ on other roads.
  • Width: 8’6” (8’ on roads narrower than 20’).
  • Height: 13’6”.
  • Weight Limits: 80,000 lbs (Interstate), 90,000 lbs (non-Interstate).

Routine Permit Limits & Escort Requirements

  • Width: Up to 16’.
  • Height: Varies by route.
  • Weight:
    • Single axle: 20,000 lbs
    • Tandem axle: 40,000 lbs (with proper spacing)
    • Steer axle: 15,000 lbs (additional weight requires bridge approval)

Escort Requirements for Oversize Shipments

  • Length:
    • Over 80’ (2-lane roads) – 1 escort
    • Over 100’ (2-lane roads) – 2 escorts
  • Width:
    • Over 12’ – 1 escort
    • Over 14’ (2-lane) or 16’ (multi-lane) – 2 escorts
  • Height: Over 15’8” – 2 escorts (plus utility/railroad notifications)

Safety & Compliance

  • Marking & Signage:
    • Oversize Load” signs are required on the front and rear of the vehicle.
    • Flags must mark the widest points and any overhang exceeding 4’.
  • Special Cases: Dozers with blades over 12’ wide can’t travel more than 50 miles without blade removal.
