When it comes to transporting heavy haul – oversize or overweight loads – in Oklahoma, being aware of the vehicle dimensions, weight limits, and permit requirements is important to avoid issues when transiting your heavy haul. Here are details:
Permit Validity & Operating Hours
Oversize permits are valid for three days and must be obtained before entering Oklahoma.
Operating times are from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, seven days a week.
Overweight permits allow continuous travel but must be requested when applying.
Restricted Travel & Holiday Closures
Restricted on Interstates in Cleveland and Tulsa counties during peak hours (7–9 AM and 3:30–6:30 PM, weekdays).
No permit travel is allowed on major holidays.
Oklahoma Turnpikes & Legal Dimensions
Loads up to 9’6” wide don’t require a Pike Pass.
Wider loads (up to 11’6” or 13’6” on Cherokee Turnpike) require a Pike Pass reference.
Maximum weight on turnpikes is 108,000 lbs.
Legal Dimensions for Heavy Haul Trucks:
Length: 59’6” on U.S. Defense Highways; 53’ on other roads.
Height: Over 15’8” – 2 escorts (plus utility/railroad notifications)
Safety & Compliance
Marking & Signage:
“Oversize Load” signs are required on the front and rear of the vehicle.
Flags must mark the widest points and any overhang exceeding 4’.
Special Cases: Dozers with blades over 12’ wide can’t travel more than 50 miles without blade removal.
While transporting heavy haul, proper route planning, understanding of safety regulations, and obtaining the appropriate single-trip permits, are important to successful logistics management.
