All oversize loads entering the City of Lexington must conform to the requirements set by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
In general, any vehicle over 12 feet in width, 14 feet in height, and within the Class III Weight Range should obtain an oversize load permit from the Lexington Public Works Department. This includes trailers, containers, and other oversized equipment.
Additionally, loads exceeding 10,000 pounds must provide a certified engineer's report detailing the vehicle's dimensions and weight distribution to ensure safe passage through City streets.
According to the Lexington Police Department, escort vehicles are required for any oversize load exceeding 14 feet in width or height. This includes oversized equipment like cranes, excavators, and large construction trailers.
For loads exceeding 10,000 pounds, an additional police escort is mandatory for all City streets. Scheduling and payment information can be found on the Lexington Police Department's website.

From 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, oversized loads are prohibited from traveling on Main Street due to heavy pedestrian traffic.
