In general, any vehicle over 10 feet in width, 14 feet in height, and within the Class A weight category should obtain an oversize load permit from the Swarthmore Public Works Department. Additionally, oversized loads exceeding 42 inches in diameter must be accompanied by a qualified escort vehicle.
Swarthmore's historic downtown area has specific restrictions for oversized vehicles. Loads exceeding 12 feet in width or 18 feet in height are prohibited from traveling through this area unless special arrangements have been made with the Swarthmore Historic Preservation Society.
Escorted vehicles are required for any load exceeding 12 feet in width, 14 feet in height, or weighing over 40 tons. Escort vehicles must be equipped with flashing lights and a minimum of two-way radios.
The Swarthmore Police Department requires a minimum of 24 hours' notice to schedule an escort vehicle. A standard fee of $200 applies for all escorted loads.
