Heavy Haul Permits & Regulations

Find official oversize and overweight permitting resources for the 48 contiguous United States, plus selected Canadian resources. Alaska and Hawaii are outside our service coverage.

Heavy haulers need to review requirements for the actual vehicle, load and route. Use this page to find the relevant agency, then discuss the requirements of your particular move.

How to Use This Permit Resource Page

The Federal Highway Administration explains that oversize and overweight permits are issued by states, rather than by the federal government. Start with the official agency for each state along the proposed route. See FHWA’s permit guidance and state directory.

This directory points to agency information; it does not issue permits, authorize a route or determine whether your shipment can legally move. The applicable agency requirements and the conditions of any issued permit must be reviewed for the actual movement.

Check More Than the Pickup and Delivery States

Review the route through intervening states as well. State permits may not cover all local roads or other jurisdictions. Iowa’s official permit requirements, for example, distinguish state and interstate highways from local city and county roads. Read Iowa DOT’s jurisdiction guidance.

Information to Have Ready

Vehicle and Load Details

Provide transport dimensions, equipment weight, configuration and available vehicle or axle information. Identify attachments and separate pieces.

Origin, Destination and Route

Give exact locations, site access details and any proposed route. Identify local-road segments that may require a separate review.

Timing and Special Handling

Discuss desired dates, loading arrangements and any unusual handling needs. Do not assume a permit can be issued immediately.

State-by-State Permit Directory

Choose a state to open its official permit resource. Use the agency’s current materials to review application procedures, load limits, escort requirements, route restrictions and travel conditions where applicable.

Questions to Review With the Issuing Agency

Permit Type and Route Approval

Ask which permit type applies to the actual movement and what information is needed for the route review. Do not assume a permit for another load or an earlier trip covers the proposed move.

Escorts and Travel Restrictions

Review the agency’s applicable escort guidance, travel windows, holiday notices, seasonal restrictions and route conditions. Requirements and permit conditions must be checked for the specific shipment.

Processing and Schedule

Consult the relevant office about processing and any additional review. When working with heavy haulers, leave time to resolve incomplete specifications and route questions before confirming a schedule.

Canadian Permit Resources

For Canadian moves, consult the appropriate provincial or territorial authority for the route. The links below are selected starting points, not a complete Canadian directory.

Permit review and customs arrangements are separate planning questions. Identify who is handling customs and confirm the details for a United States–Canada shipment before scheduling.

Discuss Your Shipment Requirements

Heavy Haul Transporting is a division of Flatbed Hauling Quotes Inc., with asset-based transportation and freight brokerage capabilities. If you are comparing heavy haulers, share your equipment details, route and preferred dates so you can discuss the transportation arrangement and outstanding permit questions.

General reference information only. The issuing authority and the actual permit conditions govern the permitted movement. Verify the requirements for your specific vehicle, load, route and travel dates.
