The specialized freight trucking industry in the United States is a significant economic force, worth over $125 billion annually. This robust sector is experiencing steady growth, driven primarily by nationwide infrastructure projects and the increasing demand for renewable energy transport.
Scale is a defining characteristic of this industry, with more than 10 million oversize/overweight permits issued annually across the country. These permits primarily facilitate the transport of construction equipment, generators, turbines, and agricultural machinery.
Most heavy hauls involve substantial loads weighing between 40,000 to 120,000 pounds and spanning up to 20 feet wide, highlighting the specialized expertise required for safe and efficient transport.
California stands out among the top three states for oversize transport demand, a position attributed to its bustling ports, extensive agricultural operations, and thriving technology manufacturing centers.
Coastal states like California face additional complexity due to environmental protection zones along transport routes, with approximately 15% of heavy hauls involving marine-related industries.
Customer expectations in this specialized industry are clear and demanding. A recent industry survey revealed that 92% of heavy equipment buyers consider on-time delivery and damage-free transport their top priorities.

All oversize loads entering the City of Cedar City must conform to the requirements set by the Utah Department of Transportation.
In general, any vehicle over 10 feet in width, 14.5 feet in height, and within the Class 3 weight classification should obtain an oversize load permit from the Cedar City Public Works Department.
Cedar City has implemented a temporary road closure on Main Street every Saturday morning for farmer's market activities. Oversize loads planning to pass through this area should contact the city at least 24 hours in advance to coordinate their route.
Escorts are required for all oversize loads exceeding 12 feet in width or 16 feet in height. Additionally, any load that exceeds the maximum allowed gross weight of 80,000 pounds requires an escort vehicle.
The Iron County Sheriff's Office provides escort services and can be reached at (435) 586-1234 to schedule a request.
To apply for an oversize load permit in Cedar City, please visit the City's website at [www.cedarcity.org](http://www.cedarcity.org) and fill out the online application form.
Applicants must provide 7 days' notice to obtain an oversize load permit. For same-day processing, a $50 expedite fee is required.
Oversize loads are prohibited on Highway 14 between the hours of 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Due to winter weather conditions, oversize loads are restricted from traveling on any City-maintained roads during periods of snow or ice accumulation.
The standard permit fee for Cedar City is $500, plus an additional $100 per mile traveled within the city limits.
A one-time processing fee of $25 applies to all oversize load permits.
