All oversize loads entering the City of Ontario must conform to the requirements set by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
In general, any vehicle over 8.5 feet in width, 13.5 feet in height, and within the Class A Weight Classification should obtain an oversize load permit from the Ontario Public Works Department.
Additionally, all loads exceeding 10 tons must provide a minimum of two hours' notice to the City's Traffic Management Center to ensure adequate traffic control measures.
In Ontario, an escort vehicle is required for any load exceeding 12 feet in width or 15 feet in height. The City of Ontario recommends using a local police department-escorted route for loads over 14 feet tall.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol provides escort services for oversized loads and can be reached at (419) 647-7500 to schedule an appointment.
To apply for a permit in Ontario, please visit the City's website at [www.cityofontario.com](http://www.cityofontario.com) and follow the online application process.
Permit applications can also be submitted by phone to (419) 647-2333 or in person at the Public Works Department located at 333 East Main Street, Ontario OH 44905.
The City of Ontario has a daily time-of-day restriction from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, during which oversized loads are not permitted.
Additionally, the Ohio Department of Transportation restricts oversized loads on certain state highways during winter months (December to March) due to reduced speed limits and increased traffic volume.
The standard permit fee for an oversize load in Ontario is $150, with additional fees applying based on route complexity (ranging from $50 to $500).

Most heavy hauls involve substantial loads weighing between 40,000 to 120,000 pounds and spanning up to 20 feet wide, highlighting the specialized expertise required for safe and efficient transport.
California stands out among the top three states for oversize transport demand, a position attributed to its bustling ports, extensive agricultural operations, and thriving technology manufacturing centers.
Coastal states like California face additional complexity due to environmental protection zones along transport routes, with approximately 15% of heavy hauls involving marine-related industries.
Customer expectations in this specialized industry are clear and demanding. A recent industry survey revealed that 92% of heavy equipment buyers consider on-time delivery and damage-free transport their top priorities.
