All oversize loads entering the City of Tybee Island must conform to the requirements set by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
In general, any vehicle over 10 feet in width, 14 feet in height, and within the Class 3 weight category should obtain an oversize load permit from the Tybee Island Public Works Department. This is to ensure safe passage through the city's historic district and coastal neighborhoods.
Additionally, oversized loads must be escorted by a police vehicle during peak tourist season (June 15th to September 15th) to prevent disruptions to beach traffic and pedestrian areas.
Escorts are required for all oversized loads exceeding 12 feet in width or 16 feet in height, as well as those carrying hazardous materials. The Tybee Island Police Department will provide escorts during daylight hours (7am-6pm) Monday-Friday.
Additional escort fees apply during peak tourist season and on weekends.
To apply for an oversize load permit, please visit the City of Tybee Island's website (tybeeisland.org) or contact the Public Works Department at (912) 786-4573. Applications must be submitted at least 5 business days prior to the planned move date.
Required documentation includes proof of insurance, vehicle registration, and a detailed route plan. Please allow 2-3 business days for permit processing.
Movement of oversized loads is prohibited during peak tourist season (June 15th to September 15th) between the hours of 10am-6pm. This restriction helps minimize disruptions to beach activities and pedestrian areas.
No oversized loads are allowed on Tybee Island's coastal roads during high surf warnings or strong wind advisories, as issued by the National Weather Service.
The standard permit fee for Tybee Island is $150. Additional fees apply for escort services (starting at $100 per hour) and route complexity (based on distance and road type).
Fees may vary depending on the size, weight, or distance of the load.
The specialized freight trucking industry in the United States is a significant economic force, worth over $125 billion annually. This robust sector is experiencing steady growth, driven primarily by nationwide infrastructure projects and the increasing demand for renewable energy transport.
Scale is a defining characteristic of this industry, with more than 10 million oversize/overweight permits issued annually across the country. These permits primarily facilitate the transport of construction equipment, generators, turbines, and agricultural machinery.
Most heavy hauls involve substantial loads weighing between 40,000 to 120,000 pounds and spanning up to 20 feet wide, highlighting the specialized expertise required for safe and efficient transport.
California stands out among the top three states for oversize transport demand, a position attributed to its bustling ports, extensive agricultural operations, and thriving technology manufacturing centers.
Coastal states like California face additional complexity due to environmental protection zones along transport routes, with approximately 15% of heavy hauls involving marine-related industries.
Customer expectations in this specialized industry are clear and demanding. A recent industry survey revealed that 92% of heavy equipment buyers consider on-time delivery and damage-free transport their top priorities.
