Flatbed Freight Shipping Services

Open-deck shipping planned around your freight.

What We Move

Flatbed freight gives shippers an open platform for cargo that needs access from the side or above. Heavy Haul Transporting helps arrange flatbed freight shipping for manufacturers, contractors, equipment owners and businesses moving industrial products. The starting point is a clear description of the shipment: what it is, how it is packaged, what it weighs and how it will be loaded and received.

Heavy Haul Transporting is operated by Flatbed Hauling Quotes Inc. We are an asset-based carrier and licensed freight broker, combining our fleet with a network of participating carriers. Our heavy haulers review the cargo and handling requirements before discussing suitable transportation options. Whether you are moving one machine or several related pieces, accurate information helps make the quote and pickup plan useful from the beginning.

01

What Is Flatbed Freight?

A flatbed trailer has an open deck without an enclosed van body. That can make it useful for freight handled by a crane or forklift, or cargo whose shape makes enclosed loading difficult. Steel products, fabricated assemblies, packaged construction materials, skidded machinery and certain industrial components may be candidates. Each item still needs a review of dimensions, weight, support points and handling instructions before a trailer is selected.

Open access is only one part of the decision. A load must fit a workable truck-and-trailer configuration, and the loading team must be able to place it safely on the deck. Tell us about delicate finishes, protruding fittings, uneven bases and any areas that cannot bear pressure. Cargo that looks straightforward in a photograph may need supports or preparation that are not visible from the outside.

02

Flatbed, Step Deck or Another Trailer?

A flatbed offers a continuous loading platform, while a step deck has an upper and lower deck. A lower platform may be helpful when evaluating a taller item, but it changes the usable space and loading arrangement. Larger or more concentrated loads may call for a lowboy, removable gooseneck or another specialized trailer. We review these options against the actual freight rather than assigning a trailer solely from the cargo’s name.

Do not assume that a published trailer length equals the space available for every shipment. Weight distribution, support positions, accessories and the loading method can affect the plan. If you have a drawing or packing list, send it with the quote request. For several pieces, provide individual dimensions and weights so the carrier can evaluate their arrangement together.

03

Preparing Dimensions and Weights

Measure the freight in its shipping condition. Include skids, crates, packaging, braces and attached components that remain on the load. List the length, width, height and weight of each piece, and identify the source of the weight information. If components can be removed, explain who will do that work and provide the measurements for the resulting shipment.

A model specification can help identify equipment, but it should not replace measurements of a modified or packaged unit. Share current photographs from several angles and note fragile surfaces or restrictions on support and securement. For a vessel, skid or fabricated frame, manufacturer shipping instructions can help explain where the item may be supported and how it should be handled.

04

Loading and Delivery Access

Confirm whether the shipper will use a forklift, crane or another agreed method. Identify who supplies the equipment and the people operating it, and make sure the available handling equipment suits the freight and site. Standard transportation should not assume that dismantling, rigging, packaging or recovery services are included. Tell us which services you have arranged and which still need discussion.

At both locations, review gate access, staging space, overhead obstructions, ground conditions and appointment rules. A dock address alone does not establish that an open-deck trailer can be loaded there. Provide an onsite contact who knows the freight and can confirm the release instructions. Receiving hours and unloading readiness matter just as much as the pickup date.

05

Securement and Weather Protection

The carrier must evaluate securement for the actual cargo and applicable requirements. Tell us about approved attachment points, sharp edges, unsupported spans and surfaces that must be protected. Blocking, supports and protective materials should be discussed before pickup, with responsibilities clearly understood. A product’s shipping base is not automatically suitable for every trailer or load arrangement.

Open-deck freight is exposed to weather unless suitable protection is arranged. Specify whether tarping, wrapping, crating or another approach is required, and describe any moisture-sensitive components. A tarp is not the same as an enclosed, climate-controlled environment. Clear protection requirements help the team review the equipment, materials and handling time needed for the shipment.

An Actual Industrial Freight Example

Our company records include specialized mixers used to make chocolate moving from one plant to another. The associated photographs show the mixing tanks on an open-deck trailer. The supplied write-up identifies the cargo and plant-to-plant purpose; it does not provide cities, shipment weight or mileage. This example illustrates the importance of describing the actual equipment and its support arrangement when requesting an industrial freight quote.

07

What Affects a Flatbed Freight Quote?

Distance, trailer availability, shipment size and weight, handling conditions and pickup timing can affect the quote. Protection requirements, extra stops, appointment windows and permit-related work may also influence the plan. Let us know about limited access, storage arrangements or several loads that must arrive in a particular sequence. Describe each shipment separately rather than assuming every item can share one trailer.

Changes should be reported before dispatch. Different dimensions, additional pieces or a revised loading location can change the trailer, route and price. Our heavy haulers use the information you provide to discuss transportation options that fit the shipment. A complete request is more useful than a price based on a cargo description that later turns out to be incomplete.

Flatbed Freight Questions

Can a partial shipment use flatbed transportation?

Ask us to review the freight, route and timing. A shipment that does not occupy an entire trailer may have options, but available deck space, handling requirements and delivery windows must be evaluated. Do not assume that partial space is always available or that it carries the same schedule as a dedicated move.

Is tarping included automatically?

State your protection requirements when requesting the quote. The cargo’s shape, finish, packaging and sensitivity to moisture affect what should be arranged. Confirm the agreed protection before pickup so the shipper and carrier are working from the same requirements.

What information should I send first?

Send an itemized cargo description, shipping dimensions and weights, photographs, pickup and delivery locations, ready date and loading method. Include a packing list or drawing when available, plus the names of the people releasing and receiving the freight.
